Silicon Dioxide (si02)
Silicon dioxide, SiO2 or silica is an extremely popular excipient due to its high purity which is perfect for many formulations including pharmaceutical. It’s also inert meaning it won’t react with any other ingredient within your formulation.
Silicon dioxide is abundant on earth, it makes up 60% of the earth's crust and 93% of known rocks. It can be found in plants and in our food and It’s a necessity for healthy bones, skin, hair, teeth and nails.
Mainly used as a glidant in a formulation, reducing the friction amongst the particles of your formulation and allowing it to flow smoothly which in turn improves content uniformity of both tablets and capsules, also with anti-caking properties, stopping the formulation from sticking to your tooling.
It can also reduce trace quantities of moisture from your formulation which is incredibly useful if you’re using moisture sensitive actives and has been known to increase the life of your products. Many on shelf antibiotics are protected by silica dioxide for the purpose of it reducing moisture.
Everything we’ve mentioned makes Silicon Dioxide an excellent excipient in many formulations, a glidant that reduces moisture, improving formulation quality, reducing machine degradation and increasing the life of your finished product.
Only a small amount of silicon dioxide needs to be used in a formulation which ranges from 0.5 to 2 percent of your total blend.
Silicon Dioxide is recognised as GRAS or generally recognized as safe by the FDA.
